College Prep Guidelines
Freshman Year
- Improve study skills-this year’s grades count toward your Grade Point Average.
- Participate in extracurricular activates and community service through volunteer work.
- Check to see if you meet the requirements to apply for OHLAP (Oklahoma’s Promise)
- Research interests on the Internet or local library
Sophomore Year
- Continue to be involved in extracurricular activities and community service
- Continue to research interests
- Prepare for school exams. Take the PLAN and PSAT practice tests for the ACT and SAT college admission tests
- This is the last year to apply for OHLAP (Oklahoma’s Promise) Make sure that you haven’t missed out on a chance to apply.
Junior Year
- Take the core courses required to attend an Oklahoma college or university
- If you singed up for OHLAP (Oklahoma’s Promise) in the 8th -10th grade, make sure that you are taking all courses required, and continue to make good grades and stay out of trouble.
- Explore opportunities to earn college credit while in high school, like concurrent enrollment and AP Courses.
- Research financial aid options and deadlines
- Attend a college fair
- Plan to take the ACT or SAT several times
- Visit different college campuses
Senior Year
- Take the core courses required to attend on Oklahoma college or university
- If you signed up for OHLAP (Oklahoma’s Promise) in the 8th -10th grade, make sure that you have taken all required courses, and continue to make good grades and stay out of trouble
- Explore opportunities to earn college credit through concurrent enrollment or AP Courses
- Talk to your counselor and family about your goals for after high school
- Remember you may take the ACT or SAT several times
- Investigate private sources of financial aid for college.
- Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) after October 1.
- Decide which college you would like to attend and submit admission and financial aid applications. Be sure and know when the deadlines are for these forms.
- Look for your Student Aid Report and make sure everything is correct. Return the form with any corrections.
- Respond quickly to any requests for additional information. Promptly accept your financial aid award letter if required.
